Privacy policy

Last updated 13 October 2026

Splash (called Plask in Danish) is developed by Maya Boelsmand, who is the data controller for the app. This page explains what information is collected when you use the app, and what you can choose yourself.

In short

Your location

If you let Splash use your location, it's only used on your iPhone to sort beaches by distance and show them on the map. Weather forecasts are fetched for the beaches' own coordinates, not for your location. You can change the permission at any time in the iPhone Settings app under Splash, and the app also works without it.

Information on your phone

Your favorites, your settings and the swims you save in Your season are stored only on your iPhone. Swims are protected by iOS file encryption. If you use widgets or Apple Watch, the app shares a short summary of your beaches with them on your own devices. Everything is deleted when you delete the app.

Ratings and reports

When you rate a beach or report conditions (such as jellyfish or seaweed), the rating or report is saved in Apple's iCloud so other people can see it. It contains the beach, the number of stars and any tags you pick or the kind of report, and the time. It's linked to an anonymous ID that iCloud creates for Splash, so you can change your own rating. The ID doesn't reveal your name, email or Apple Account, and other people only see combined ratings and reports without the ID. Ratings and reports need you to be signed in to iCloud and are handled under Apple's privacy policy.

Data the app fetches

Splash fetches rain, weather and water temperatures from DMI (the Danish Meteorological Institute) and Apple Weather, bathing water data from Danmarks Miljøportal, and beach facilities from OpenStreetMap. These requests contain no information about you. As with any internet traffic, these services can see your IP address when the app fetches data.

Alerts and calendar

Alerts about your beaches are created on your iPhone. Splash has no server that sends you notifications. When you add a swim to your calendar, Splash opens iOS's own calendar screen, and the app can't read your calendar.

Purchases and subscriptions

Splash Plus is paid through Apple. Apple handles the payment and doesn't share your payment details with us. The app only learns whether a purchase is active, so it can unlock Plus.

Children

Splash isn't directed at children under 13 and doesn't knowingly collect their personal information.

Your rights

Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), you have the right to access, correct and delete your data, and the right to object, among others. We don't store any personal data about you ourselves. If you want your ratings and reports deleted, write to us. You can also complain to the Danish Data Protection Agency (Datatilsynet) or the data protection authority where you live.
